We started the study with the objects' material possibilities and appearances alongside some key precedent analyses. The next phase involved designing furniture-like architectural objects with more key precedent analyses. From here, we moved up to the building scale and how its structure or framework can be made of architectural objects and then filled with them. In this sense, the furniture-like objects and the housing units are objects but so are the architectural element components. The architects began by conducting test experiments of the concrete which included slump value, color, texture, and the aggregate ratios. They show these in model and diagram form. They then drew a daily concrete schedule which dictates the layering of concrete with the varying attributes they tested previously. Some of the recycled materials include soda cans, cardboard, and plastics. Concrete, plaster, rockite, and cement are used as the primary materials in this series. In some tests, the same material is used both as a part of the casted aggregate and the formwork such as sand, sawdust, and cardboard. project displays many pertinent concepts, mainly referential to the importance an object holds in architecture. The casted fusing of fireplace and stair case prove that some architectural elements can physically bind together as a singular object, even when their functions differ. When fused together, one can support the other formally while reducing the amount of material needed if one was to cast two separate objects. This moment articulates another key idea in this investigation: the architect’s role in dictating vs. implying space and function. While the function of the architectural element is dictated to the person, the space around it only implies use (or offers freedom in choosing). The space that architects create should be designed for the ability to change over time, hence implying the use of the space but dictating the architectural element’s purpose. ︎︎︎series of precedent in an open lot located in the Banks on the riverfront development of Cincinnati, Ohio. The goal here was to play with flexibility of space in two ways. The first way was that the first two levels are plinth extrusions of the lot with a simple framework structure to keep the floor plan free to insert these architectural objects. I tried to make this flexible by not infilling the interior with much that would be permanent: rather, the space can change over time because it is more open and less defined. When I was thinking about how to get enough daylight into the interior of the deep floorplate, I decided that the residents would need parking and access to parking, so I made that interior part of it a parking garage which would go down another level below grade too where the existing parking is. Within this floorplate, I made the architectural objects so that they either sit in the spaces between the columnar frame structure, or they wrap around the columns. In this way, they would have an almost gravitational pull to the people in those spaces because of their object quality. sitting on top of the 2-level plinth is multi-unit housing. I designated a band of horizontal circulation and then inserted vertical circulation cores onto it. The housing units themselves can snap onto the double-loaded horizontal circulation corridor. This part is flexible because while I would expect this area of downtown to increase in population over time, my thinking is that this does not happen overnight. Accordingly, I am proposing that you start with this basic structure that would hold the units. As time progresses, you could build out the rest of the building so that the density slowly increases without having unnecessary vacant units. in Cincinnati called The Banks just south of Cincinnati’s downtown CBD. While the project sites are primarily determined, their content is not. Fort Washington Way acts as a trench between the downtown CBD and the riverfront. The Brent Spence Bridge on the west and the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge on the east act as physical boundaries, with the Ohio River defining the south edge. Harsh edge conditions have disconnected the Banks from the downtown area, leaving behind an underdeveloped “neighborhood”. It then provides green/public spaces, walkability, and other essential programmatic elements (grocery, rec center, food hall, and shops) for a community. This parcel also adds flexible housing in repsonse to the population fluctuation of the Banks, found on a daily basis with the nightlife scene and game days along with the following decades as the Banks continues to develop. However, population increases for permanent residents do not happen over night; the flexible housing implemented encourages building out the buildings over time without over-densifying from the beginning. The gaps between the units can be utilized as shared spaces. Ft. Washington Way is capped and transformed to a flex-green space (one of the largest in the city) and bridges back to the CBD to remove the spatial divide. It acts as a daily park, an ampitheater for concerts, a gathering space for Oktoberfest, or other seasonal events. daapcares best in show graduate said award [2024] This proposal reimagines 23 acres of the levee-impeded Covington riverfront as an athletic campus which brings recreation in conjunction with bright, exciting environmental graphics. The monotonous rectangular blocks of the immediate context are exchanged for circular forms, creating a more open, wandering, and varied pedestrian experience as a relief from the typical repeating city grid. A thread-like path dynamically wraps through the site, connecting each building. Repeated circular buildings serve as housing and define activity zones within each courtyard. We have called these community activators. Atop each community activator are public spaces that provide arena-like seating and elevated vantage points to spectate activities across the site. A large multipurpose arena, a cluster of three residential towers, and an administrative building also occupy the site. The ground surface hatches are both porous and literal colors, offering an optimistic alternative to the typical urban context. programmed communities. It does this through the use of circular, interior-focused building forms scattered across the site. All buildings are lifted above the ground plane to provide safety from potential flood waters. The vessels ground themselves deep into the earth with precast concrete columnar legs and lift the building onto an overhead concrete plinth. Above ground, the plinth’s arms reach out towards the Ohio River with rentable party spaces and connects to the Purple People Bridge on the southwest. Elevating the building allows for ground access between the park and street. The raised pedestal floor system atop the concrete plinth creates a horizontal plenum, allowing space for MEP. The glulam-structured vessel tops huddle together and overlap, intersecting and fusing to form a dynamic interior where wall seamlessly becomes ceiling, met by punctured skyward apertures. <img The intent of the sequence being the critical reestablishment of the ‘case study house prompt’ itself within our region and contemporary context, followed by a collection of architectural proposals, research, and analysis that test the efficacy of our questions." - Whitney Hamaker My capstone project, SNAP! homes reimagines the Case Study house as a catalogue of precast modular home component systems that ship directly to the site. Within the catalogue, there is a single story and double story home with editable layouts to match the user’s preferences. Additionally, there is a mobile pod system which is meant to snap to a new or existing host structure; this gives the ability to move from one site to another. 3 options are given in the catalogue, with further customizability for the user, allowing for a range of lifestyle choices for the consumer at varying scales. from the SNAP! homes catalogue is the host module and mobile pod. The host module is formed from precast concrete modules. This will contain the necessities for living (not found in the mobile pod) such as water, electric, bathrooms, a kitchen, and living area. This structure gives the ability for 6 pods to be hosted at once by easily snapping them into place. The mobile pod contains the user’s sleep and work spaces with ample personal storage in the thick wall. The exterior is clad in corrugated metal, while the interior walls contain CNC milled sanded plywood panels that aid in dampening sound from the exterior. This allows for a peaceful interior as a quiet space is necessary for work sessions and sleeping.
